Pests are often present in a home for some time before they're actually seen. Most species are naturally cautious around people, which means the first clue is usually indirect — a mark, a smell, or a noise rather than the pest itself. Here are ten of the most common signs Berkshire homeowners notice.

1. Droppings

Small dark droppings near skirting boards, in cupboards, under sinks or in lofts are one of the clearest signs of rodent activity. Their size and location can offer clues as to whether you're dealing with mice or rats.

2. Gnaw marks

Rodents need to gnaw constantly to keep their teeth in check, so chewed skirting boards, food packaging, cables or even furniture corners are a strong indicator something is living nearby.

3. Scratching or scurrying noises

Sounds in walls, floors or the loft, particularly at night, often point to mice or rats moving around the property.

4. Nesting material

Shredded paper, fabric or insulation gathered in a hidden corner suggests a nest is being built somewhere quiet and undisturbed.

5. Grease marks and smears

Rodents tend to follow the same routes repeatedly, leaving faint dark smudges along skirting boards or wall bases where their fur brushes the surface.

6. Unusual smells

A persistent musty or ammonia-like smell in a confined space, such as under a cupboard, can indicate a rodent nest nearby. A strong, unpleasant smell in a loft can also point to an animal nest or, occasionally, a dead pest that hasn't been found.

7. Damaged fabrics or carpets

Small irregular holes in wool carpets, rugs or stored clothing, sometimes with fine powdery debris nearby, are a common sign of carpet moth activity rather than rodents.

8. Bites or itchy skin

Small itchy bite marks, often in lines or clusters, particularly after sleeping, can be a sign of bed bugs or fleas, especially if pets are present in the home.

9. Visible insect activity

A steady trail of ants heading to and from a food source, or wasps repeatedly entering and exiting a gap in brickwork or roofing, are both signs worth investigating before numbers grow.

10. Structural damage

Small holes in brickwork, damaged airbricks, or chewed timber around the eaves and loft can all indicate a pest has found a way in, and often a way to keep coming back.

Putting the signs together

One sign on its own isn't always conclusive, but two or three together — say, droppings combined with noises at night, or a smell alongside grease marks — are a good indication that something needs a closer look. Catching the signs early, before an infestation becomes established, usually makes for a much simpler resolution.

Where to look first

If you suspect something but aren't sure where to start, focus on the quiet, undisturbed corners of the house first. Under the kitchen sink, behind large appliances, along the base of built-in wardrobes, and around the loft hatch are all common places for early signs to appear, simply because these spots see the least daily disturbance. Sheds, garages and the base of exterior walls are worth the same attention outdoors, particularly anywhere that stays dry and sheltered.

Don't wait for every sign to appear

It's tempting to wait until you're completely certain before doing anything, but pest populations, particularly rodents, can grow quickly once established. Acting on one or two early signs, even if you're not one hundred percent sure what's causing them, is generally far more effective than waiting for the full picture to become obvious over several weeks.
