Why Not the Pile
A bed bug wants a gap that touches it on both sides — back and belly against something solid. Carpet pile does not offer that. It is soft, open, disturbed by every footstep, and it is nowhere near as good as a mattress seam six feet away.
A flea is a different animal with different needs: its larvae develop in the debris that collects at the base of the pile, which is exactly why a flea treatment covers the floor and a bed bug treatment does not.
Where On a Carpet They Do Go
- Behind the gripper rod at the wall — the carpet edge tucks into a slot the length of the room, which is the right shape entirely
- Under the carpet edge itself where it meets the skirting
- Under an underlay edge that has lifted
- Around a threshold strip in a doorway
- Under the edge of a rug that lives under a bed and never moves
Every one of those is a long narrow slot at the perimeter. None of them is the open floor, and none of them is more than a few centimetres from a wall or an edge.
What edge activity tells you. The same thing skirting activity does — that the harbourages nearer the bed have filled up. It puts a problem at months rather than weeks and it widens what needs treating.
The Three Floor Insects People Confuse
- Bed bugs. Flat top to bottom, four to five millimetres, reddish-brown, wingless. At the carpet EDGE, and mainly in the bed. They bite
- Fleas. Narrow side to side, two to three millimetres, dark, and they jump. In the pile, in pet bedding and on the animal. They bite, usually around ankles
- Carpet beetle larvae. Elongated and obviously bristly. In the pile, under furniture and along edges. They eat wool and they do NOT bite — although the hairs of some species can irritate skin
Three different insects, three different treatments, one floor. Getting this wrong is why households sometimes spend months treating a carpet while the problem sits in a bed.
Does the Carpet Need Treating?
The edges, where the evidence calls for it. The open floor, no. A treatment that covered a whole carpet for bed bugs would be putting product where they are not, and leaving out the joints and seams where they are.
Vacuuming the edges is genuinely useful as preparation — use the crevice tool along the skirting line, then empty the bag or canister straight into an outdoor bin. It removes insects, cast skins and debris. It does not remove eggs, which are cemented in place.

Replacing carpet with laminate or engineered board removes one harbourage and creates another: the expansion gap at the perimeter runs the whole way round the room under the skirting or the beading, and it is a better slot than a gripper rod.
So a hard floor changes the shape of a perimeter inspection rather than removing the need for one. It does make the middle of the floor genuinely uninteresting, which was already true.
Do not have the carpet lifted or replaced as a response. It is expensive, it disturbs the exact edge where the evidence is, and it does nothing about the bed - which is where the population actually lives.
