Early Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Evidence appears in a fairly reliable order, and knowing the order tells you roughly where in the story you are standing.

1. Occasional marks on the skin, dismissed as something else entirely — and often not present at all, since many people do not react
2. A few dark specks along the mattress piping at the head end. Easily taken for dirt
3. One pale cast skin in a frame joint or a seam. This is the first genuinely diagnostic thing most people see
4. Small blood smears on the sheet, usually near the shoulders or upper back
5. Spotting concentrating in one part of a seam rather than being scattered
6. A live insect found in a harbourage. By this point the infestation is established

Telling Early Evidence From Ordinary Dirt

• Dark spotting is deposited by an insect that sat there, so it clusters at a seam or a joint rather than spreading evenly
• It smears when touched with a damp white cloth, leaving a rust-brown mark. Dry dirt brushes off
• Cast skins are unmistakable once seen: the shape of the insect, pale and empty, splitting along the back
• Eggs are cemented in place. Something that shakes loose is not an egg
• Blood smears on bedding sit where a body has pressed, not where a mark was rubbed in

What Makes Early Signs Easy to Miss

• There is very little of it, in one small area, in a fold you never look into
• The bed is made every morning, which covers the exact place to look
• Bites are intermittent and often attributed to something in the garden or something in the wash
• One person in a bed can be reacting while the other is not
• A mattress protector hides the seam it is meant to protect

The Five Minute Check

1. Strip the bed to the bare mattress
2. Run your eye along the piping at the head end, both faces, with a torch held nearly flat to the surface
3. Lift any labels and look underneath
4. Look into the frame joints and the slat housings at the head end
5. Look at the top face of the divan or the frame under the mattress
6. If there is a fixed headboard, look down the gap behind it

A torch held at a low angle rather than pointed straight on is worth more than any other single thing here. It picks out texture in a seam that a direct light flattens out.
