The hardest bed bug problem to find is not a bad one. It is a small one in a room nobody sleeps in, because the thing that normally raises the alarm — somebody waking up with bites — is not happening.

A spare room, a guest suite or a rarely used second bedroom can carry an infestation quietly for a long time, and it is the usual reason a house that was treated properly has bed bugs again a few months later. Treatment in Ascot starts from £220 for the first room.

Bed Bug Treatment for Bedrooms and Guest Rooms

A bed bug does not need a host every night. It feeds every few days when it can, and when it cannot it simply waits — for months at ordinary room temperatures, and longer in a cool, unused room.

That is the whole of the guest room problem. The room is not clearing itself between visitors. It is holding, and each visitor restarts it.

The pattern to recognise. Bites for a few days after somebody stays, then nothing for weeks, then bites again after the next visit. That is not a coincidence and it is not something in the bedding. It is a population in the guest bed waking up to a host.

Why the Guest Room Is Found Last

  • Nobody sleeps in it, so nobody reports bites
  • It is cleaned rather than searched, and cleaning does not look inside a seam
  • Guests who are bitten frequently say nothing, because saying it is awkward
  • Reaction to bites varies enormously, so several guests can pass through without a mark
  • It is often the room where cases are opened and left — the exact point at which an infestation arrives

The Check Worth Doing Twice a Year

A guest room that is used occasionally deserves ten minutes twice a year, and it is a short list.

  1. Strip the bed and look along the mattress piping at the head end, both faces
  2. Lift the mattress and look at the top of the divan or the frame underneath it
  3. Take out any divan drawers and look at the runners and the backs
  4. Look behind the headboard, particularly a fitted or padded one
  5. Look at the skirting and carpet edge along the wall behind the bed
  6. Look under and inside any upholstered chair kept in the room

If the room has a luggage rack, or a place where cases are habitually put down, look at that as well. It is the arrival point.

Treating a Room With No Host

The practical difficulty in an unused room is that there is nothing drawing the insects out of harbourage, so the treatment has to reach into the harbourages themselves rather than rely on activity to do the work. That is a reason to inspect thoroughly before treating, not a reason for a heavier treatment.

It is also a strong reason to treat the guest room at the same time as the main bedroom rather than afterwards, in any house where both are in doubt. Sequential treatment of connected rooms is how an infestation survives.

After Guests Stay

  • Strip the bed and check the piping while it is bare — it takes two minutes and the mattress is already exposed
  • Launder the bedding hot and tumble dry it; that deals with anything carried in the linen
  • Do not move the guest room mattress or headboard into another room "to air"
  • If a guest mentions bites, treat it as information rather than embarrassment and look properly

The expensive version of this mistake. Main bedroom treated, guest room not inspected because nobody sleeps in it, problem returns in the autumn when somebody stays. The second treatment costs what the inspection would have.

Questions

Bed Bug FAQs — Ascot

How much does bed bug treatment cost in Ascot?

From £220 for the first room. Where there is a guest room as well as a main bedroom, having both looked at in one visit is worth asking about — it is the sequential version that tends to cost twice.

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

In an occupied room, bites prompt a search. In a guest room there are no bites to prompt one, so the answer is a physical check: spotting along the mattress piping, cast skins in the frame joints, eggs in a seam.

Can bed bugs spread to another bedroom?

Yes, and the guest room version usually runs the other way — the guest room is the reservoir and the main bedroom is what gets treated. If one room in a house has them, the others are a question, not an assumption.

Do I need to throw away my mattress?

Usually not. A guest room mattress in good condition is a good candidate for treatment followed by an encasement, which also makes future checks a great deal quicker.

Do I need to prepare the room?

Yes. In a guest room the useful preparation is emptying it of stored belongings, because spare rooms accumulate things and every stored box is somewhere the treatment cannot reach.

Can you treat flats and rental properties in Ascot?

Yes — houses, flats, annexes, guest accommodation and rented property. Say at the booking how many rooms have beds in them, whether or not anybody is sleeping in them.

How do I book treatment?

Call 0118 336 1366. Mention any room with a bed in it, including ones nobody uses — those are the rooms this goes wrong in.
