Why Furniture Is Such a Good Vehicle

A suitcase carries an insect for a few days. A bed frame carries an entire established population, with its harbourages, its cast skins and its eggs, straight into a bedroom — and then sits there next to a host.

It is the difference between an introduction and a transplant. That is why a house with no travel, no visitors and no neighbours can still end up with a serious problem in a single afternoon.

The Pieces That Matter, In Order

1. Beds. Frames, divan bases, headboards, mattresses. The whole point of the object is to be where somebody sleeps
2. Upholstered seating. Sofas, armchairs, sofa beds — an interior you cannot see into
3. Bedroom storage. Bedside cabinets, chests of drawers, wardrobes with a lot of joints
4. Office and desk chairs, which are upholstered and have a mechanism
5. Everything else. A dining table or a bookcase is a low risk, though not zero if it came from an infested property

Checking a Piece Before It Comes In

Do this outside — in the garden, the drive or the van — not in the room it is destined for. Fifteen minutes, and if you find something you have saved yourself a treatment.

1. Turn it over first. The underside of anything is the busiest surface and the least looked at
2. Torch every joint, screw recess and bolt hole
3. On upholstery, check the dust cover underneath, any tear in it, and the seams where arms meet the seat
4. On a bed, check the slat housings, the headboard fixings and every corner joint
5. On drawers: out, and turned over
6. Look for spotting and cast skins rather than for insects — they stay put and they are what you will actually see

Where Second-Hand Pieces Come From

• Online marketplaces. Usually collected from a house, which means you are in the property and can look at the room it came from
• House clearances and auctions. Frequently from a property that has been standing empty — which is not a reset, because bed bugs survive months without a host
• Family and friends. The awkward one, and the one nobody inspects, because inspecting it feels like an accusation
• Office furniture, particularly chairs, when a business closes or refits
• Storage units, where furniture may have sat for years

Reading: Turnover Cuts Both Ways

A lot of Reading housing changes hands often, and furniture circulates with it — between tenants, between shared houses, between students at the end of a year. Every one of those handovers is an opportunity, and none of them comes with an inspection.

If you are furnishing a let or a shared house from second-hand sources, the beds are the ones worth the fifteen minutes. Everything else can wait.

If Something Is Already In the House

Do not carry it back out through the property. Check it where it stands, and if it is infested it needs wrapping before it moves — the same rule as any disposal. Then get the room looked at, because whatever came in has had time to leave the item.
