Lists of hiding places are easy to find and hard to use. This is the rule underneath them, which is more useful, because it lets you look at your own bed and work out the answer yourself.
A bed bug settles where its back and its underside are both against something solid. This is the big one and it explains more than any other single fact about the insect.
It is why a seam works and an open surface does not, why a countersunk screw hole is close to ideal, and why they are found in the fold of a fabric rather than on the face of it. A gap that touches on one side only is a poor site; one that touches on both is a good one, almost regardless of what it is made of.
Not darkness alone — a dark room is not a harbourage. What matters is that the place is never disturbed. That rules out the top of a bedside table, which is dark at night and handled every day, and rules in the back of a headboard that has not moved since it went up.
They travel to feed and prefer a short trip. Given two equally good gaps, the one nearer a sleeping head wins — which is why an infestation concentrates at the head end of a bed and thins out towards the foot.
Timber, fabric and paper are easier to hold and move on than polished metal, glass or gloss-painted surfaces. It is a minor factor next to the first three, and it is part of why a wooden frame holds more than a welded steel one.
Apply the rule to your own bed. Look for a gap you could just slide a bank card into, that nothing ever moves, within a metre of a pillow. Every place on every list is that description, and you will find places on your own furniture that no list mentions.
Run a wall-fixed headboard through the four conditions and it passes each one comfortably: a continuous slot against the plaster, never moved, directly above a sleeping head, and usually timber or fabric rather than metal.
That is not a coincidence of design. It is why the same object turns up in every inspection, and why a board bolted to the bed frame — which moves and usually stands clear of the wall — is a meaningfully lower risk despite looking similar.
A mattress offers one kind of site: the seam and its piping, in a line round the edge. Good, accessible, and finite.
A frame offers dozens of independent sites — every joint, every fixing, every slat housing — most of them enclosed on several sides and none of them visible without dismantling something. That is why an established infestation is more often found in a frame than in the mattress on top of it, and why a treatment involves taking the bed apart.
Describing the bed is genuinely useful, because the four conditions turn a description into an expectation. A divan with drawers and a fixed padded headboard has a great many sites; a metal frame with a mattress and no headboard has very few.
It is one of the few things that changes the shape of a visit before anybody arrives, and it takes ten seconds to say.
The rule cuts both ways on DIY sprays. An aerosol reaches surfaces you can aim at, which by definition are the surfaces that fail condition one. It is not that the product is weak - it is that it arrives everywhere except where they are.

A gap tight enough to touch them on both sides, never disturbed, close to where somebody sleeps, on a surface they can grip. A place meeting all four is a harbourage; one meeting two or three usually is not.
Distance. They travel to feed and prefer a short trip, so given two equally good gaps the one nearer a sleeping head is used first. Activity thins out towards the foot of a bed for the same reason.
It offers more sites - screw recesses, slat housings, splits in the timber, and a surface that is easier to grip. A welded metal frame has far fewer, though the mattress and headboard are unchanged.
Treatment starts from £220 for the first room. Tell us how many rooms people are sleeping in, what you have found — live insects, dark spotting, cast skins — and how long it has been going on, and we will come back to you.
