When Is Furniture Disposal Necessary?

The Four Findings

1. An established population inside a void that cannot be opened. A sofa frame behind a glued or heat-bonded dust cover, a sealed divan void in some constructions, the stuffing of a deep-buttoned headboard
2. A torn dust cover with heavy activity inside the frame and padding of an upholstered piece
3. A sofa bed with an established population in the mechanism and the folded mattress. The hardest common item there is
4. An item already at the end of its life, where treating costs a meaningful fraction of replacing it

The fourth is not a bed bug reason at all, and it is the one that applies most often. That is worth noticing.

What Is Not a Finding

• That the item has bed bugs on it. That is the starting condition
• That it feels contaminated. Real, understandable, and not a technical reason
• That somebody said so without looking underneath it
• That you would rather not think about it. Which is fair enough, and is a decision about money rather than about insects

Doing It Properly: Before It Moves

1. Wrap it in the room. Heavy polythene and tape, closed completely, before it goes through a doorway
2. Book the collection first. Bulky waste, a tip run or a removal — arranged before the item comes out, not after
3. Plan the route. Shortest way out, doors open, nothing to rest it against on the way
4. Mark it so nobody takes it. Cut the upholstery, spray it, or tape a written note to it. This matters and it is the step people skip

Doing It Properly: On the Way Out

• Do not rest it on the stairs, in a hall or against a landing wall
• Do not put it down in a communal area of a block, even briefly
• Do not leave it on a pavement or a drive for days waiting for a collection
• Do not put it in a garage, a loft or a storage unit "for now" — cold and quiet is where they last longest
• Do not give it away, and do not list it

After It Has Gone

1. Have the room treated anyway. The item was never the whole of it — the frame, the skirting and the carpet edge are still there
2. Check the route it took out: the landing, the stairs, the hall
3. Do not order the replacement until you are told the room is ready
4. When the replacement arrives, fit an encasement if it is a mattress or a base

Cookham: The Cost Nobody Adds Up

Disposal is not free even when the collection is. There is the replacement, the delivery, the disposal charge in some areas, the shedding along the route, and the risk that the room is not treated because the problem appears to have left in a van.

Set against a treatment of the item, disposal is usually the more expensive option and the less effective one. It is worth being clear about that before the skip is booked, because once the item is gone the decision cannot be revisited.
