Everybody starts here and it is the weakest evidence available. This page covers what the differences are said to be, and then the more useful point: none of it is reliable enough to act on.
Bites cannot tell you what bit you. Not reliably, not from a photograph, and not from a pattern. Everything below is a tendency rather than a rule, and the exceptions are common enough that acting on the appearance of a bite is how households end up treating the wrong insect for months.
Anything about your skin — a reaction that concerns you, something that is not settling, anything infected — is a question for a pharmacist or a GP rather than a pest controller. What we can tell you is what is in the room.
Every one of those has a large overlap with the others, and each of them varies more between people than it does between species.
This is the part that undoes the whole exercise. Reaction to a bed bug bite differs enormously from person to person: some people react within hours, some take days, and a significant proportion show no visible reaction at all.
The practical consequence. "Only one of us is being bitten so it cannot be bed bugs" is one of the most common wrong conclusions in this trade. It is exactly what an infestation looks like in a household where one person happens not to react.
Use the bites for what they are actually good for: a prompt to go and look. Then settle it with physical evidence, which does not vary between people.
If the bites continue and you can find nothing at all, that is worth taking seriously rather than looking harder at the same bed. It usually means one of three things: it is very new and there is genuinely almost nothing to find, you are looking at the wrong bed in the property, or it is not an insect at all.
Say that when you call. Identification is part of the job, and a household that has spent three months treating a carpet for the wrong thing is a much more common story than it should be.
Do not buy a treatment based on a bite. Flea products, bed bug products and moth products are not interchangeable, and the money spent on the wrong one buys the actual problem another month.

Not reliably. Bed bug bites tend to be on skin exposed in bed and flea bites around ankles, but the overlap is large and reaction varies far more between people than between species.
It can easily be. A significant proportion of people show no visible reaction at all, so two people can be bitten equally with only one showing anything. It is one of the commonest wrong conclusions.
Anything about your skin that concerns you, is not settling or looks infected is a question for a pharmacist or GP. A pest controller can tell you what is in the room, not what caused a mark.
