Can Bed Bugs Hide in Skirting Boards?

What Perimeter Activity Actually Means

Bed bugs settle as close to a host as a suitable gap allows, and they extend outward only as the good places nearer the bed fill up. Skirting is not near a host. It is what you use when the mattress seams, the frame joints, the divan and the headboard are already occupied.

So finding them at the skirting line is a statement about duration. It generally means months rather than weeks, and it means the bed alone is not the job.

Where On the Perimeter

• The top edge of the skirting, where it meets the plaster — a continuous gap on a poorly filled run
• The bottom edge, where it meets the floor covering
• Behind a loose or lifting section, particularly at a corner or a joint between two lengths
• The carpet gripper rod, which stands proud of the floor with the carpet edge tucked behind it — a slot the length of the wall
• Under the edge of laminate or engineered flooring, where the expansion gap is covered by the skirting or a beading
• Socket and switch faces on the wall the bed stands against
• Around pipe penetrations and boxed-in service runs

Notice the pattern: every one of those is a long, narrow, continuous gap along a wall. That is the same shape as a mattress seam, which is why the perimeter works for them at all.

Which Wall

Not all of them. Start with the wall the head of the bed stands against and work outward from directly behind the pillows. Activity on that wall is expected in an established case; activity on the far side of the room is a different and more significant finding.

In a flat or a converted house, activity concentrated on a wall shared with another household rather than on the bed wall is worth reporting specifically. It raises a question about the adjoining unit that no amount of treating your own room will answer.

How To Look Without Making It Worse

1. Pull the bed away from the wall first
2. Torch along the top edge of the skirting at a low angle, working out from behind where the pillows sit
3. Run a card into the gap at the top edge if there is one
4. Look at the carpet edge where it tucks behind the gripper
5. Look at the socket and switch faces on that wall — look only, do not unscrew anything
6. Photograph anything you find, in place

Why Spraying the Skirting Does Not Work

It is the instinctive response and it is the wrong one. A shop aerosol reaches the face of the skirting, which is the one part they are not in, and its main achievement is to disperse the population deeper into the gap and outward along the wall.

It also removes the evidence that would have told somebody how far the problem had actually gone, which is the thing that decides what needs treating.

What It Means for the Job

A room with perimeter activity is a room where the floor line has to be reachable all the way round, which is the preparation instruction people find most inconvenient and skip most often. Furniture off the walls, clear floor, and nothing stored along the edges.

It is also a strong argument for having the adjoining rooms looked at, because a population that has reached the wall has been running long enough to have had other opportunities.
