How Long Can Bed Bugs Stay Hidden?

An adult bed bug can survive for months without feeding at ordinary room temperatures, and considerably longer in a cool space. Cold does not kill them at the temperatures a British house, garage or loft reaches — it slows their metabolism, which extends how long they last.

That is the single most counter-intuitive fact about them, and it is the one that catches people out over and over.

Where That Matters

• An empty property. A house or flat that has stood empty over a winter has not reset. If anything the cold has helped them
• Furniture in storage. A storage unit, a garage or a loft is cool, dark and undisturbed — close to ideal conditions for waiting
• A guest room. No host means no bites, so a population can sit there indefinitely, restarting each time somebody stays
• A second-hand item that has been in a garage or an auction house for months. Not safer for the delay
• A room somebody has stopped using because they were being bitten. It waits for them

How Long Before You Notice?

A different question, and the answer is usually longer than the infestation has existed.

1. Weeks one to four. A handful of insects, a few marks on a seam. Almost nothing to find, and bites intermittent or absent
2. Months one to three. Spotting becomes visible in the seams, cast skins start to accumulate. Bites more regular in people who react
3. Months three to six. Harbourage extends into the frame and the divan. Most households have noticed by now
4. Beyond six months. Perimeter activity, bedside furniture, possibly a second room

Those are indicative rather than precise. What is reliable is the order, which is why an inspection can say roughly how long a problem has been running from where the evidence sits.

The Three Reasons It Goes Unnoticed Longest

• Nobody in the household reacts to bites. A significant proportion of people show no visible reaction at all, and a household of two non-reactors can go a very long time
• The affected bed has no regular occupant. Guest rooms, spare rooms, a bed used at weekends
• Bites get attributed to something else. The cat, the garden, a change of washing powder, a skin condition

• Assume nothing has cleared itself, however long it has stood empty
• Check the mattress piping at every changeover, while the bed is bare
• Do a proper ten-minute check twice a year regardless of use
• Treat a guest who mentions bites as information rather than as a complaint
• Fit encasements, which turn every future check into a glance
