Case One: Moving Furniture Within the Room

Verdict: fine, and usually necessary.

Pulling a bed away from the wall, taking drawers out, tipping a base to look underneath, moving a chest off the skirting — all of it is inside the same treatment area. Nothing crosses a threshold and nothing goes anywhere it was not already.

It is also the whole of the preparation instruction about access. A bed that cannot be moved cannot be taken apart, and a bed that cannot be taken apart cannot be properly treated.

Case Two: Moving Furniture Between Rooms

Verdict: do not, unless you have been told to.

This is the one that costs money. A chest of drawers, a chair or a bedside cabinet moved to another room takes whatever is in its joints with it, and it takes it to a room that was clean. The receiving room then needs inspecting, and often treating.

• A mattress swapped between children's rooms
• A chair moved downstairs "out of the way" during preparation
• A headboard put in the spare room while the bed is dealt with
• Drawers or boxes carried out to be sorted through later

Every one of those is done by somebody being helpful, and every one of them widens the job.

Case Three: Moving Furniture Out of the House

Verdict: only after an inspection, and only wrapped.

An infested item carried out sheds along its route — the landing, the stairs, the hall, the doorway. That is how three additional areas join a job that was one bedroom.

1. Have it looked at first. Very little genuinely needs to go
2. If it does, wrap it in heavy polythene and tape it before it leaves the room
3. Shortest route out, and do not rest it on the stairs
4. Cut or mark it so nobody takes it off the street
5. Bulky waste collection rather than leaving it out for days
6. Have the room treated regardless

The Special Case: Moving House

Everything moves at once, which is the highest-risk furniture movement there is — and it is also an opportunity, because an empty property is the easiest thing in the world to inspect.

If you know or suspect there are bed bugs and a move is coming, say so when you book. Treating before a move is considerably cheaper than treating two properties afterwards, and it avoids the conversation with a removal firm.

The scale of what a furniture move costs you depends on how far the infestation has already got. An infestation still confined to the mattress seams has very little in the furniture to move; one that has been running for months has it in the frame, the cabinets and the skirting.

So the earlier it is caught, the less a mistake with the furniture actually costs — which is another version of the same argument for not waiting.
