What They Are
A bed bug passes through five stages between hatching and adult, and it has to shed its outer casing to move between each one. Each shed leaves behind a complete, empty, transparent shell in the exact shape of the insect.
It also has to take a blood meal before each shed. So a cast skin is not just a sign that a bed bug was there — it is proof that one fed successfully and grew.
Why that matters more than anything else you might find. A single insect carried in on a bag leaves no cast skins. A collection of them means a population has been feeding and developing in that spot for weeks at least. It is the difference between an introduction and an infestation.
What They Look Like
- Pale, straw-coloured or almost transparent, and papery
- Exactly the shape of the insect — oval, flat, with visible leg and antenna outlines
- Split along the back, where the insect came out
- Hollow. Held up they are see-through
- Various sizes, from about a millimetre to nearly five, because each stage sheds
- Very light. They shift if you breathe on them
That range of sizes is itself informative: skins of several different sizes in one place means the whole life cycle is running there rather than a few adults having arrived.
Telling Them From Other Debris
Bedrooms accumulate a lot of pale debris, and this is where cast skins get dismissed.
- Not skin flakes. Human skin debris is irregular and has no shape; a cast skin has legs
- Not fluff or lint. Fibrous rather than shell-like
- Not carpet beetle skins, which are bristly and elongated rather than smooth and oval
- Not eggs. Eggs are a millimetre, white, cemented in place and not insect-shaped
- Not dead insects. A dead bed bug is opaque and has contents; a cast skin is hollow and open at the back

Where To Find Them
Wherever the population sits, which is not necessarily where it feeds — they collect in the harbourage.
- Mattress piping and seams, at the head end
- Frame joints, bolt recesses and slat housings
- The stapled fabric edge of a divan base and inside its drawer recesses
- Behind a headboard fixed to the wall
- Bedside cabinet drawer backs and runners
- Along the skirting line, in a long-running case

- Do not vacuum the area yet — you are removing the rest of the evidence
- Look at the rest of that seam or joint for spotting and more skins

A cast skin is enough to act on. It does not need to be accompanied by a live insect, and waiting to see one is waiting for the population to grow.
