• A small pale one is a nymph, and a nymph means breeding, which means an established population rather than an arrival
• A rounded, dark red one has fed recently
• A clear or straw-coloured empty shell is a shed skin rather than an insect. Skins mean growth, so they mean the same as a nymph

The distinction that matters most is adult-or-arrival versus nymphs-and-skins. One insect on its own after a trip is a very different situation from one nymph in a bedroom nobody has travelled from.

Then Look Around It, Properly

Now the two minutes of restraint pays. Take a torch, strip the bed, and work outward from where it was.

1. The mattress piping, both faces, at the head end first
2. The corners and the label seams
3. The top of the base or frame under the mattress
4. The divan drawers, taken out and turned over
5. Behind the headboard and along its join with the wall
6. The bedside furniture joints and drawer backs
7. The skirting and carpet edge on the bed wall

What you are looking for is not more insects — it is the dark spotting along seams and joints, which is far easier to see and far more informative.

The Things That Make It Worse

• A shop spray or a fogger. Scatters a localised population through the room and the rooms next to it
• Moving to another bed or the sofa. Takes the problem with you and starts a second site
• Throwing the mattress out that evening. Removes the evidence, and an unwrapped mattress moving through a house or a stairwell spreads it
• Stripping and carrying bedding loose through the house rather than bagging it in the room
• Doing nothing for a fortnight to see whether it happens again
