What They Cannot Do
- Bite or sting. Neither adults nor larvae — there is no mouthpart involved that could
- Feed on a person or an animal. Larvae eat keratin in fibre. They are not parasites and a living host is of no interest
- Transmit disease to people or pets
- Get into food. That is a pantry moth — a different insect, found near kitchen cupboards
- Damage the building — no timber, wiring or plaster
If something is biting you in bed, it is not this. That points at bed bugs, fleas or mites, and it is a completely different treatment. People do sometimes put bites and a moth problem together because both involve the bedroom, and it is worth separating early.
Is the Sofa Still Safe To Sit On?
Yes. There is nothing hazardous about sitting on upholstery with a moth population in it. What is happening is that the filling is being eaten, which is a furniture problem rather than a health one.
- Sofas and armchairs: safe to use. Vacuum thoroughly, including the crevices and the underside
- Mattresses: safe to sleep on. Wool-filled mattresses and toppers can be affected as a material — wash or replace the bedding, and vacuum the mattress
- Curtains: safe. Take them down and have them cleaned if they are affected
- Cushions and throws: safe. Wash hot what can be washed
- Carpet: safe to walk on barefoot
The reason to deal with any of it is that the material is being destroyed, not that anyone is at risk.
The Two Real Qualifications
Carpet beetle larvae are a different insect
Carpet BEETLE larvae — small, brown and visibly bristly, often called woolly bears — have fine hairs that can irritate some people's skin. Carpet MOTH larvae are smooth and cream and do not. If somebody has unexplained irritation and moths were assumed, establish which insect is actually there.
Debris and dust
A heavy long-running population leaves shed skins, silk and frass, which adds to household dust — and inside upholstery that accumulates in a place nobody vacuums. Some people with existing asthma or allergies find dusty environments aggravating. Thorough vacuuming addresses it.

Pets
- No direct risk — not parasitic, and no threat to an animal
- A pet that eats a larva has not been poisoned; it is fibre and protein
- Pet beds are often wool or sheepskin and ARE at risk as a material — wash hot or replace
- Shed pet hair collecting inside upholstery and in floor corners is genuine food for larvae
Treatment Around the House
- People and pets out of treated rooms for the exclusion period given on the day
- Fish tanks covered and pumps off; birds and small animals out
- Ventilate afterwards
- No vacuuming until the specified period has passed
- Soft furnishings that are treated need the same exclusion period as the floor — do not sit on a treated sofa before the time is up
- Tell us in advance about anyone pregnant, any infant, or any respiratory condition
