Why Cold Storage Does Not Help

There is a common assumption that an unheated loft or garage is too cold for insects. It is not. Cold slows the larval stage rather than ending it.

The practical effect is the opposite of what people expect. In a warm house the feeding stage passes relatively quickly. In a cold garage it can stretch out over a very long period — which means a problem in storage persists quietly for years rather than burning itself out, and emerges intact whenever the box is finally opened.

What Is Actually Up There

• Boxed clothing, particularly wool coats, suits and jumpers kept 'just in case'
• Bedding and blankets, especially wool blankets and eiderdowns
• Rolled rugs and carpet offcuts — among the highest-risk items there are
• Curtains taken down and folded away
• Soft furnishings from a previous house or a previous decor
• Camping and outdoor equipment with felt, wool or down content
• Taxidermy, sheepskins, hides and feather items, which are pure keratin
• Old upholstered furniture stored in a garage or outbuilding

Checking a Loft or Outbuilding Safely

1. Go up in daylight with a torch, and stay on boarded areas or the joists
2. Do not open boxes up there and shake things out — take them outside
3. Look at the eaves and the wall plate for nest material and debris
4. Check anything soft, and check the underside and the folds rather than the outer surface
5. Look for small holes, fine webbing, larval cases and a fine gritty debris
6. If you find damage, bag the affected items where they are rather than carrying them through the house

That last point is the one that matters most. The difference between a contained problem and a household one is frequently a single armful of textiles carried from the loft to the bedroom to be looked at in better light.

Storing Things So This Does Not Happen

• Clean before storing. Body oils, perspiration and food traces attract larvae; a washed item is far less attractive than an unwashed one
• Seal rather than cover. Rigid boxes with lids, or sealed bags. A dust sheet is not a barrier
• Do not store rugs rolled and loose. If a rug must be stored, clean it, seal it, and check it periodically
• Keep textiles off the floor of a garage or outbuilding
• Check once a year, which is the whole of the prevention

In the House Itself

• Small moths close to the floor, running rather than flying
• Irregular thinning or bald patches in wool carpet
• Damage along carpet edges and beneath furniture
• Fine webbing, larvae or shed cases in the pile
• Moths appearing near a loft hatch or a cupboard rather than a room
• Small holes in clothing that has been stored

The Larvae Do the Damage

Adult moths do not feed at all. The larvae do, and in a cold store they do it slowly and for a long time. This is exactly why something can come out of a loft after five years with active larvae still in it.

Why DIY Treatment Misses Storage

• It is applied to floors while the source is in a box
• Lofts and outbuildings are treated as outside the problem
• Sealed boxes are not opened, so nothing is found
• One unopened container restarts the whole thing later
• Traps monitor adults and remove nothing
