The Gaps Between the Boards

A suspended timber floor is not a sealed surface. Between and beneath the boards there is a void, and along the perimeter there is usually a gap where the boards meet the skirting.

That gap collects things: dust, hair, fibres from the rug above, textile debris from a century of occupation. It is dark, undisturbed, never cleaned, and it contains exactly what larvae feed on.

Rugs: The Part That Actually Gets Eaten

On a boarded floor the rug is the food source, and a rug has two properties that make it worse than a fitted carpet. It has an underside that never sees light or disturbance, and it can be moved from room to room.

• Turn rugs over and look at the back — damage frequently shows there long before the pile looks thin
• Check under any part covered by furniture, which is where feeding concentrates
• Look at the fringe and the selvedge, which are often the first to go
• Check anything stored rolled up, which is ideal conditions
• A rug moved to another room takes the problem with it

Fitted Furniture, Alcoves and the Quiet Corners

Period rooms have more places to hide than modern ones. Chimney breast alcoves, fitted cupboards either side of them, window seats with storage beneath, deep skirtings, panelling and the back corners of built-in wardrobes are all undisturbed by definition.

When we assess a Windsor property these are the places we look first, and they are the places worth checking yourself before you call, because knowing where activity is concentrated makes the treatment more accurate.

Conservation Areas and What Can Be Done

Parts of Windsor sit within conservation areas and some buildings are listed. Ordinary carpet moth treatment does not involve structural alteration, so it is not usually a planning matter, and we are not the right people to advise on that in any case.

What is worth saying is that we work around original features rather than through them, and that if a valuable or historic textile is involved we will tell you plainly where the limits of an ordinary treatment are and when a specialist textile conservator is the better call.

Signs on a Boarded Floor

• Small moths close to the floor, particularly near skirting and in alcoves
• Thinning, bald patches or holes in rugs, often first visible from the underside
• Damage at a rug's edges, fringe or the part under a chair leg
• Fine webbing in the gap between board and skirting
• Larval cases in the perimeter gap or in a cupboard corner
• Damage to anything wool stored at floor level

The Larvae, Not the Moths

Adult carpet moths do not feed on wool. The larvae do, and they spend that stage where they are least likely to be disturbed. Killing the moths you see removes the visible symptom and none of the cause, which is why the problem so often appears to resolve and then returns.
