Disturbance Is the Thing They Cannot Tolerate

Carpet moth larvae are not robust. What actually suppresses them in an ordinary home is not cleanliness in the abstract — it is physical disturbance. Feet on the floor, furniture moved, vacuuming, light, air movement.

A house that is empty from eight to seven has none of that for eleven hours a day, five days a week. The rooms that get no use at all — a spare bedroom, a dining room used at weekends, a study — effectively have none at all.

Heating Patterns and the Speed of the Problem

Larvae develop faster when it is warm. A house heated in two bursts a day, with unused rooms shut and cold, produces a range of conditions under one roof.

• Warm rooms in daily use: faster development, more generations, but more disturbance
• Cool unused rooms: much slower development, but nothing to interrupt it, so it runs uninterrupted for a long time

The Holiday Problem

1. Before a long trip, vacuum properly — including edges and, if you can, under one or two heavy items
2. Empty the vacuum outside rather than leaving a full bag indoors
3. Do not leave wool clothing out on chairs or beds
4. Put stored woollens somewhere sealed rather than in an open wardrobe
5. On your return, look at carpet edges and under furniture before you unpack

The Rooms Worth Checking This Weekend

• The spare bedroom, particularly under the bed and in the wardrobe
• The dining room, under the table and behind the sideboard
• A study or box room that has become storage
• The landing, especially the edges and the far end
• Any room whose door stays shut
• The airing cupboard and the under-stairs cupboard

Signs to Look For

• Small moths close to the floor rather than around lights
• Irregular thinning or bald patches in wool carpet
• Damage along carpet edges and against the skirting
• Bare areas revealed when heavy furniture is moved
• Fine webbing, larvae or shed larval cases in the pile
• Moths noticed at the weekend, when you are actually there to see them

That last one is worth saying. Sightings in a commuter household cluster at weekends for the obvious reason, which means the problem is usually further along than the frequency of sightings suggests.

Adults Are Not the Infestation

Adult carpet moths do not feed on carpet. The larvae do, underneath something. Killing the moths seen on a Saturday morning does nothing to the larvae that have had the whole week to themselves.
