What They Cannot Do
- Bite or sting. Neither adults nor larvae — there is no mouthpart involved that could
- Feed on a person or an animal. Larvae eat keratin in fibre — wool, silk, feather, fur. They are not parasites
- Transmit disease to people or pets
- Get into food. That is a pantry moth, a different insect found near kitchen cupboards and dried goods
- Damage the building — no timber, wiring or plaster
If something is biting, it is not this. Bites point at fleas, bed bugs or mites. Coming home from a trip and finding bites is worth identifying properly rather than assuming it goes with the moths — they are different insects and different treatments.
Is Anything In the House Unusable?
This is the practical question after a fortnight away, and the answers are mostly reassuring.
- Bedding. Wash it hot before using it. Not because it is hazardous, but because it may have eggs or larvae in it and washing deals with that
- Clothes left out or in a wardrobe. Shake them out and look at the shoulders and folds. Wash or dry-clean anything wool before wearing it, mainly to avoid carrying larvae elsewhere
- Towels. Cotton is not at risk. Wash them anyway if they have been sitting
- Soft furnishings. Vacuum thoroughly. There is nothing unsafe about sitting on a sofa with a moth population in the room
- Food. Unaffected. Carpet moths have no interest in it — if something IS in the food cupboards, that is a pantry moth and a different job
- Pet bedding. Wash hot. Wool blankets are a genuine target as a material
The Two Real Qualifications
Carpet beetle larvae are not the same insect
Carpet BEETLE larvae — small, brown, visibly bristly, often called woolly bears — carry fine hairs that can irritate some people's skin. Carpet MOTH larvae are smooth and cream and do not. If somebody has unexplained irritation, establish which you have before assuming.
Accumulated debris adds to dust
A heavy long-running population leaves shed skins, silk and frass in the carpet. In a house shut up for a fortnight that has settled rather than been vacuumed away, and some people with existing asthma or allergies find dusty environments aggravating. Ventilate and vacuum thoroughly on your first day back.

Pets
- No direct risk — they are not parasitic and pose no threat to an animal
- A pet that eats a larva has not been poisoned; it is fibre and protein
- Pet bedding is at risk as a material and should be washed hot
- Shed pet hair in undisturbed corners is genuine food for larvae, so vacuum the edges
- If pets have been in a cattery or kennels while you were away, nothing about this affects bringing them home
Treatment, and Timing It Around Being Away
- People and pets out of treated rooms for the exclusion period given on the day
- Fish tanks covered and pumps off; birds and small animals out
- Ventilate afterwards
- No vacuuming until the specified period has passed
- Tell us in advance about anyone pregnant, any infant, or any respiratory condition
- If you are going away again, treating just before you leave is not ideal — nobody is there to ventilate, and nobody sees the result
