What Renovation Does to an Infestation

A carpet moth infestation is usually concentrated: a strip along one wall, the area under a wardrobe, one rug, one cupboard. Left alone it spreads slowly. Disturbed, it spreads at the speed of your furniture.

The Right Order

3. Remove old underlay rather than laying over it
4. Do not store soft furnishings or rugs untreated during the works
5. Vacuum thoroughly as rooms are cleared, and empty the vacuum outside
6. Check again once everything is back, because the disturbance may have revealed activity that was hidden

Treating a house mid-renovation, with belongings in three different rooms and a carpet half up, is possible and it is considerably less effective than treating it before or after.

Storage: Where the Problem Waits

Anything soft that goes into a loft, a garage, a shed or a storage unit during building work spends months undisturbed, unheated and unlooked-at. If it went in with larvae on it, it comes back out worse.

• Rugs rolled and stored are a particular risk — dark, tight, undisturbed
• Wool blankets, throws and cushions bagged up without checking
• Curtains taken down and folded away
• Boxes of clothing and textiles that will not be opened for a year

Vacuum and inspect anything wool before it is packed, and store it sealed rather than loosely covered. It is a small amount of work at the right moment and it prevents the version of this problem that is discovered a year later.

Signs to Check For Before Work Starts

• Small moths close to the floor rather than around lights
• Bald or thinning irregular patches in wool carpet
• Damage along carpet edges and against skirting
• Bare areas revealed when furniture moves — look as you clear
• Webbing, larvae or shed cases in the pile
• Damage to rugs, particularly on the underside

Clearing a room for building work is the best inspection opportunity you will get. Look at the floor as it is exposed rather than covering it straight over.

The Larvae Are the Problem

Adult moths do not eat carpet; the larvae do. This matters during renovation because the adults are the visible part and the larvae are what travels in the furniture you are moving. A room that shows no moths can still be carrying the infestation to the next room.
