Before Anyone Treats Anything

The first part of a visit is looking, and it should be. A treatment aimed at the wrong rooms is a treatment that has to be repeated.

• Confirming it is carpet moths and not clothes moths, pantry moths or something else
• Finding what they are actually eating — carpet, underlay, a rug, upholstery, stored textiles
• Working out which rooms are involved, which is usually more than the one you have seen them in
• Checking the edges, under furniture, and any storage areas in scope
• Agreeing what is included before anything is applied

The Treatment Itself

• Carpets and floor coverings, with particular attention to the perimeter, the edges against skirting and the areas under furniture
• Rugs, upholstery undersides and stored textiles where they are in scope
• Exposed floor, gripper rods and perimeter where carpet is up
• Roof space, garage or outbuildings if the source is there

How long it takes depends on the number of rooms and how much has to be moved. A typical house is a matter of hours rather than days, and we will tell you the expected time when we quote rather than on arrival.

What You Will Be Asked To Do On the Day

• Somebody over 18 present to give access
• People and pets out of the rooms being treated while the work is done
• Fish tanks covered and pumps off; birds and small animals out
• Tell us if anyone in the household is pregnant, an infant, or has a respiratory condition, so the aftercare advice fits the household

Afterwards

1. Stay out of treated rooms for the period given on the day, then ventilate
2. Do not vacuum for the period specified — too soon removes the treatment
3. Do not shampoo or wet-clean treated carpets
4. Put furniture back once the carpet is dry and the wait is up
5. Expect some moths for two to three weeks as remaining eggs hatch. Falling numbers are normal; steady or rising after four weeks is not
6. Keep a rough weekly count — it is the only reliable way to tell progress from stalemate

Fitting It Around Building Work

This is the part specific to a house mid-project, and getting the order right saves doing it twice.

1. Treat while the floor is open — skirting off, carpet and underlay up. Best access there will ever be
2. Before first fix, so nothing is sealed behind new work
3. Before new underlay and carpet. New wool over an untreated floor is a fresh food supply on top of the problem
4. Before skirting goes back on and is caulked
5. Coordinate with the trades — nobody should be working in a room during its exclusion period, and we would rather know than turn up to an electrician mid-job

Follow-Up

Not automatic, and it should be explained rather than assumed. Whether one is warranted depends on how far it had spread, whether the food source could be fully reached, and what the counts do over the following weeks.
