Why Room Shape Decides Where Larvae Live

Larvae need somewhere undisturbed with a food source. In a plain rectangular room there are four such places — the edges — plus whatever is under the furniture. In a cottage room there are a great many more.

• Chimney breast alcoves, which are usually filled with furniture, shelving or a cupboard and never cleared
• Built-in cupboards, particularly the back corners and the carpet beneath them
• Deep window reveals and window seats with storage underneath
• Under-stairs cupboards, which are dark, deep and full of soft items
• Awkward corners where a wall is not square and a vacuum head does not fit
• Deep skirtings and the gap behind them
• Thresholds between rooms at different levels, which collect debris

Fitted Furniture That Predates You

Older village houses frequently have built-in cupboards, dressers and wardrobes that cannot practically be moved. The carpet beneath them, and the floor at the back of them, have not been touched since they were installed.

This is not a reason for despair — treatment can reach into and around fitted furniture — but it is a reason to point them out rather than assume they are outside the problem. They are usually inside it.

Where the Floor Changes

Cottage properties often have several floor types in a small space: fitted carpet in one room, boards in another, flags or tiles in a hallway, and rugs on top of some of it.

Junctions between them matter. A carpet edge at a threshold, the gap where boards meet a stone floor, and the strip under a door are all collection points for debris and all sheltered. They are also, conveniently, easy to check yourself.

Signs to Look For

• Small moths close to the floor, running rather than flying, and particularly emerging from alcoves or cupboards
• Irregular thinning or bald patches in wool carpet
• Damage in the corners and along edges rather than in the open floor
• Bare areas revealed when something is moved for the first time in years
• Fine webbing in a recess, a cupboard corner or a deep skirting gap
• Larvae or shed cases in the pile or in the perimeter gap
• Damage to rugs, usually visible on the underside first

The Larvae Do the Damage

Adult carpet moths do not feed at all; the larvae do. In a cottage the distance between where a moth is seen and where the larvae actually are can be small in metres and large in accessibility — the alcove is two feet away and has not been emptied since 2011.

Wool, and What Is Actually at Risk

Larvae feed on natural animal fibres, so wool carpet, wool rugs, blankets and clothing are all suitable. Synthetic carpet is not, though the underlay beneath it may be. In an older property the answer is more often wool than not.
