Why Older Skirting Is Different
- It is deeper — often 150mm or more, so there is more of it and more behind it
- The walls are not flat. A straight board against an undulating wall leaves a gap that varies along its length and can be considerable in places
- It is fixed to timber grounds in many older properties, leaving a continuous cavity behind the board
- The floor is not flat either, so the gap underneath varies too
- Carpet cannot follow an irregular line, so the cut edge sits away from the skirting in places and is tucked hard in others
What that adds up to. A continuous, dark, ventilated channel running the whole perimeter of every room, collecting fibre and hair for as long as the house has existed, reachable by nothing you own. It is the single best habitat in the building.
What Activity There Tells You
- Damage following the wall is the classic established pattern — usually not new
- Worse in corners and behind furniture, which are the stillest parts of the stillest strip
- Worse in an alcove than on an open run, for the same reason
- Debris but no damage means the carpet is synthetic or a wool-mix that has not thinned visibly yet, not that nothing is happening
The Alcove and Chimney Breast Corners
Where the skirting turns into an alcove there are two internal corners and one external one within a couple of feet, usually with fitted shelving or a cupboard above. Nothing reaches those corners — not a vacuum, not a mop, not a hand.
If a room has activity along its perimeter, those corners are where to look first, and they are where a treatment has to reach for it to hold.
What You Can Do Yourself
- Run a crevice tool along the whole perimeter, into every corner and alcove, moving what furniture you can
- Empty the vacuum outside afterwards
- Turn back the carpet edge where it is loose-laid or where a tuck has lifted, and look
- Photograph what you find before clearing it
- Do not fill or caulk the gap behind the skirting until the perimeter has been treated
