1. Count them. Date, room, number, weekly. A month of counts turns an impression into evidence
2. Place monitoring traps at floor level, numbered and dated — one per room, and one inside an alcove cupboard if you can
3. Empty one alcove cupboard to the back and look at its floor with a torch
4. Turn back the carpet at the nearest cut or tuck
5. Look under a window seat if there is one
6. Check the fireplace and flue

A trap inside a fitted cupboard is worth more than any amount of looking at the open floor, because it samples the one place you cannot inspect.
