Why a Staircase Is Such Good Habitat

Consider what a stair carpet actually is. A strip of wool, laid over an irregular surface, with a huge amount of edge relative to its area, in a part of the house that is walked on only in the middle.

• Nobody walks on the outer ends of the treads. The last few inches at each side of every step take no traffic at all
• The angle between tread and riser collects dust, hair and fibre, and a vacuum head does not sit into it properly
• Under the nosing, the lip at the front of each tread, is a sheltered overhang
• Behind the spindles and against the string is awkward to reach and rarely attempted
• Stair rods and grippers create further gaps
• A runner on boards has its own underside plus the boards beneath it
• The half landing, where a stair turns, is a flat area nobody stands on

Why It Matters More Than It Sounds

A staircase connects every floor of the house. An infestation established there is well placed to supply the landing, the bedrooms and the hall, and it is being missed while each of those rooms is treated in turn.

It is a fairly common explanation for a house that gets treated room by room and never quite comes clear.

Period Staircases Specifically

In a Victorian or Edwardian house the stairs are often original, and that adds a few things.

• Gaps between the treads and the strings, and shrinkage gaps generally
• The underside of the staircase, if open into a cupboard
• An under-stairs cupboard, which is dark, deep and usually full of coats, bags and soft items
• Original stair rods with a gap behind them
• Old underlay, sometimes felt-based, beneath a modern carpet

The under-stairs cupboard deserves particular mention. It is frequently the least-inspected space in the whole house and it is usually full of exactly the materials larvae feed on.

Signs on a Staircase

• Thinning or bare patches at the outer ends of treads, not the middle
• Damage concentrated in the tread-to-riser angle
• Fine webbing under a nosing or behind a spindle
• Larvae or shed cases in the pile at the edges
• Small moths on the stairs, on the landing, or running along a skirting
• Damage on a runner's underside, or on the boards beneath it

The Rest of the House

The stairs are the point of this page, not the whole of the job. Elsewhere the usual places apply: under beds, sofas and wardrobes; carpet edges against the skirting; rugs and their undersides; fitted cupboards; and anywhere wool is stored.

The Larvae Do the Damage

Adult carpet moths do not feed on wool; they lay eggs on it. The larvae feed, over weeks, out of sight. On a staircase that means the damage develops at the edges while you walk up and down the middle of it every day without seeing anything.

Why DIY Treatment Misses Stairs

• They are not thought of as a room, so they are not on the list
• A spray applied to a floor is not applied to a vertical riser
• Vacuuming stairs is awkward and usually covers the tread centres
• Under-stairs cupboards stay full
• Adult sightings on a landing get attributed to the nearest bedroom
