The Sequence Question, Settled Before the Day

If the staircase is in scope, and it usually should be, everybody and every pet needs to be on the right side of it before the work starts.

• Decide which floor people will be on, and get what is needed up or down before the treatment begins
• That includes pets, pet food, medication, work things, and anything for a child
• Plan for the full drying and exclusion time given on the day, not a guess
• If somebody in the household cannot easily be kept off the stairs for that period, say so when booking — the work can be sequenced differently

The Week Before

1. Walk every carpeted room and look under one heavy item in each. Write down what you find
2. Check the stairs properly — the outer ends of the treads and the angle against the risers
3. Empty the understairs cupboard and look at its floor
4. Decide about rugs, upholstery and stored textiles
5. Arrange for pets — fish tanks covered and pumps off, birds and small animals out for the day
6. Check access and parking

The Day Before

1. Vacuum thoroughly, edges against the skirting included, and empty the vacuum into an outside bin
2. Do the stairs slowly, with the crevice tool into the angle of each tread and along the outer ends
3. Clear the stairs completely — no shoes, baskets, books or anything else on the treads
4. Clear the landings, which are part of the job rather than a corridor
5. Clear the floor of small furniture, boxes and laundry baskets
6. Empty wardrobe bases and the bottoms of fitted cupboards
7. Roll back any rug in scope and leave it in the room
8. Do not shampoo or wet-clean the carpets — a damp carpet is a poor surface to treat

What You Do Not Need To Do

• Empty the house
• Move anything too heavy to move alone — say which items instead
• Take up fitted carpet or lift the stair carpet
• Remove stair rods
• Redecorate anything

On the Day

• Somebody over 18 present to give access
• People and pets on the agreed floor, or out of the property
• Allow the time quoted rather than booking something straight after

Afterwards

1. Stay off the stairs and out of treated rooms for the period given, then ventilate
2. Do not vacuum for the period specified — vacuuming too soon removes the treatment
3. Do not shampoo or wet-clean the treated carpets
4. Put furniture back once the carpet is dry and the wait is up
5. Watch the stairs specifically over the following weeks — if the population was there, that is where a return shows first
6. Expect some moths for two to three weeks. Falling numbers are normal; steady or rising after four weeks is not
