The Ordinary Route: Adults, Slowly

Adults are poor fliers. They run and flutter close to the floor, travel short distances, and avoid open lit space. Left to themselves they move a room at a time over months.

• Through a doorway at floor level, especially with a threshold gap
• Along a hallway, following the skirting
• Up a staircase, using the treads
• Through a gap under a door

That route is slow enough that catching it early genuinely contains it, which is the argument for treating adjacent rooms rather than only the affected one.

The Faster Route: Through the Floor

This is the one that matters in a period property and the one that explains results that otherwise look impossible.

1. The under-floor void. Beneath a suspended timber floor there is a continuous space running the footprint of the house. It is dark, still, ventilated, and it does not stop at internal walls
2. Board gaps as access. Fibre and debris fall in from above, and what is living below can come back up anywhere along the run
3. Ceiling voids between storeys, connected to the floor above
4. Service runs — pipework and cabling holes drilled through joists and plates, which are a continuous corridor
5. Behind deep skirtings, where there is often a gap the length of a wall

The Route People Underestimate: Carrying

• Moving a rug from one room to another
• Taking a suitcase or a box out of a wardrobe and putting it down somewhere else
• Vacuuming an infested room and then a clean one without emptying the machine
• Moving upholstered furniture between rooms
• Bringing something down from a loft

This moves an infestation further in an afternoon than the insects manage in a year, and it is the one thing entirely within your control.

How To Slow It Down While You Deal With It

1. Do not move rugs, textiles or upholstery between rooms
2. Empty the vacuum outside after every room, not at the end
3. Close doors between the affected room and the rest of the house
4. Do not put anything from the affected room into a wardrobe elsewhere
5. Treat adjacent rooms as well as the affected one
6. If the floors are suspended timber, say so — the scope needs to account for what is under them

Why Treating One Room Rarely Works Here
