The Reach Problem
A hand spray puts product on the top of the pile and a little way into it. That is the right place if the larvae are in the pile.
- Board gaps. The spray goes over the gap rather than into it, and what is down there is untouched
- The under-floor void. Not reachable from above at all
- Under a rug. Only if you lift it, which people rarely do
- Beneath old underlay. The spray sits on the carpet; the larvae are underneath it
- Behind and under heavy furniture. Which is where the infestation usually is, and where a hand spray is hardest to use
- Inside a rug's foundation, where the damage on a hand-knotted rug is happening
The pattern this produces. Three quiet weeks while the adults die off, then moths again from the untreated part. It reads as the product not working. The product worked, on about a fifth of the problem.
The Timing Problem
Eggs are far less affected than larvae. One application catches one stage, and the stages are staggered across a population, so a single spray on a single day removes a slice rather than the thing.
Larvae also feed for months. An infestation that has been running since last autumn has generations at every stage in it at once.
The Risk Nobody Mentions: What It Does To the Floor
This matters more in an older property than in a modern one, and it is worth being blunt about.
- Wet solvent on old wool can lift dye. Natural dyes in an older or hand-knotted rug are considerably less stable than modern ones
- Water-based products on a rug with an unstable dye can bleed colour from one area into another, and it does not come back
- Repeated wetting of old boards raises grain, marks finishes and can lift wax or shellac
- Overspray onto skirting and paintwork, particularly older paint systems
- Staining on a light or undyed wool carpet, which shows

Where DIY Genuinely Helps
Not nothing, and worth doing alongside rather than instead.
- Thorough vacuuming, including edges, board gaps and under furniture, emptied outside each time. This physically removes eggs, larvae and debris and it is the single most effective thing a householder can do
- Washing what can be washed, hot, and having the rest cleaned
- Sealing woollens clean and dry
- Traps for monitoring, which tell you whether anything is changing
- Getting rid of old carpet offcuts and unused underlay
When To Stop and Call
- Numbers not falling after two attempts
- Damage spreading past a mark you made
- More than one room affected
- Board gaps, an under-floor void or old underlay involved
- Any rug or textile you would not want to risk
