The Ordinary Reasons
- Reach. A hand spray treats the surface it lands on. Under an unmoved bed, beneath underlay and under an unlifted rug are untouched
- Eggs. Much less affected than larvae, and they hatch for weeks afterwards
- Staging. A population contains every stage at once, so one application removes a slice
- Scope. People treat the room where they saw it, and eggs are usually already elsewhere
So: three quiet weeks, then moths again. It reads as the product failing. It worked on the part it reached.
The Shared-House Reason
Four separate rooms, four separate decisions, no coordination and no shared record.
- One person sprays thoroughly and moves the bed
- One sprays the visible floor and does not move anything
- One buys a different product and does the wardrobe instead
- One does nothing, because they have not seen anything and it is not their problem
- Nobody does the landing, the stairs or the living room, because they belong to nobody
The arithmetic of this. The house is reinfested from whichever room and communal area was least well done. Three people can do everything right and get nothing for it, because the population is sitting on the landing carpet the whole time. A partial treatment across a connected house is close to no treatment at all.
The Other Shared-House Problem: Nobody Owns the Measurement
Even where DIY might work, in a shared house there is usually nobody keeping track — so a failing attempt runs for months on the strength of one person's impression that it seems better.
- One person keeps the record, whoever volunteers
- A numbered trap in each bedroom and one on the landing
- A weekly count, written in one place everybody can see
- Mark and photograph the damaged patches with dates
- Agree a stopping point before starting — if numbers are not falling by week six, it goes to the landlord

Communal areas are not one person's to treat unilaterally. Raise them with the landlord or agent rather than spraying a shared landing without telling anybody.
Where DIY Genuinely Helps
- Vacuuming. Thorough, edges included, under the bed, emptied outside every time. It physically removes eggs, larvae and debris and it is the most effective thing anybody in the house can do
- Washing bedding and washable textiles hot
- Sealing woollens clean and dry
- Traps, for measuring
- Clearing anything textile out of communal cupboards
When To Stop and Report It
- More than one bedroom affected
- Anything found on the landing, stairs or in the living room
- Numbers not falling by week six
- Damage grown past a mark
- Different people having used different products
