The Visit Itself

It starts with looking, and it should. A treatment aimed at the wrong rooms is one that gets repeated.

• Confirming it is carpet moths rather than clothes moths, pantry moths or something else
• Establishing what is actually being eaten — carpet, underlay, a rug, upholstery or stored textiles
• Which rooms are involved, usually more than the one where they were seen
• Checking edges, under furniture, and storage areas in scope
• Agreeing the scope before anything is applied

Then the flooring is treated, with particular attention to the perimeter, the edges against skirting and the areas under furniture, along with rugs, upholstery undersides and stored textiles where they are in scope. A typical house is hours rather than days, and the expected time should come with the quote.

The Move Timing, Which Is the Real Question

1. Best: after completion, before your furniture arrives
2. Good: after moving in, before rugs and soft furnishings are unpacked into the affected rooms
3. Workable: after you have settled in, with furniture moved on the day
4. Worst: unpack everything, put the rugs down, and treat six months later once it has reached your things as well

If completion and removals are on the same day that window does not exist, and that is common. Then the next best thing is treating before the boxes are unpacked rather than after.

Protecting What You Are Bringing In

1. Do not unpack wool rugs, blankets or coats into an untreated affected room
2. Keep your own textiles boxed or bagged until the treatment is done and the wait is up
3. Do not put your rugs down over a floor that has not been treated
4. Check anything you inherited with the house before it joins your belongings
5. If in doubt, keep your things in one unaffected room until it is settled

On the Day

• Somebody over 18 present to give access
• People and pets out of the rooms being treated
• Fish tanks covered and pumps off; birds and small animals out
• Tell us about anyone pregnant, any infant, or anyone with a respiratory condition, so the aftercare advice fits the household

Afterwards

1. Stay out of treated rooms for the period given, then ventilate
2. Do not vacuum for the period specified — too soon removes the treatment
3. Do not shampoo or wet-clean treated carpets
4. Move furniture in, or back, once the carpet is dry and the wait is up
5. Expect some moths for two to three weeks as remaining eggs hatch
6. Keep a rough weekly count. Falling is normal; steady or rising after four weeks is not
