The Decision To Make First

Stored textiles are either part of this job or they are not, and either answer is workable. What does not work is leaving it undecided until the day.

• In scope: boxes and bags are opened and their contents dealt with alongside the rooms. More work, and it settles the whole property at once
• Out of scope, sealed: anything wool stays sealed, is not opened during the treatment, and is dealt with separately — cleaned, bagged, or checked later
• The one to avoid: boxes half open, contents spread across a treated room, nothing decided

The Week Before

1. Walk every carpeted room and look under one heavy item in each. Write down what you find
2. Decide the stored-textile question above
3. Open one box of anything wool and look, so you know which answer you are giving
4. Arrange for pets — fish tanks covered and pumps off, birds and small animals out for the day
5. Check access and parking

The Day Before

1. Vacuum thoroughly, edges against the skirting included, and empty the vacuum into an outside bin
2. Move what you can. Clear the floor of small furniture, laundry baskets, toys and shoes
3. Move the boxes off the carpet in any room that is in scope — the floor under a stack is one of the most likely sites and it has to be reachable
4. Empty wardrobe bases and the bottoms of fitted cupboards
5. Roll back any rug in scope and leave it in the room
6. Do not shampoo or wet-clean the carpets. A damp carpet is a poor surface to treat

What You Do Not Need To Do

• Empty the house
• Move anything too heavy to move alone — say which items, and it is handled on the day
• Take up fitted carpet
• Unpack a storage unit off-site
• Wash everything in the building

On the Day

• Somebody over 18 present to give access
• Allow the time quoted rather than booking something straight after
• People and pets out of the treated rooms while the work is done
• Tell us if anyone in the household is pregnant, an infant, or has a respiratory condition, so the aftercare advice fits

Afterwards

1. Stay out of treated rooms for the period given on the day, then ventilate
2. Do not vacuum for the period specified — vacuuming too soon removes the treatment
3. Do not shampoo or wet-clean the treated carpets
4. Put furniture back once the carpet is dry and the wait is up
5. Deal with the stored textiles you kept out of scope before they go back into treated rooms
6. Expect some moths for two to three weeks; falling numbers are normal, steady or rising after four weeks is not
