How to Prevent Carpet Moths Returning After Treatment in Ascot

The First Eight Weeks

This is monitoring rather than prevention, and it is the part people skip.

1. Expect some moths for two to three weeks as remaining eggs hatch. That is normal
2. Keep a weekly count — date, room, number. It is the only way to tell progress from stalemate
3. Falling numbers by week four is what you want. Steady or rising is not
4. Mark the edge of any damaged patch and photograph it with the date. Growth past the mark means something is still feeding
5. Do not vacuum until the period specified has passed, then vacuum normally including the edges
6. Call back at week six if numbers have not fallen, rather than waiting to see

The Routine, Sized For the House

1. Every few weeks: move one heavy item in one room and look. Rotate, and keep the list
2. Monthly: vacuum the carpet edges in the rooms in regular use, not just the middle, and empty the vacuum outside
3. Quarterly: go into the rooms that are not in regular use at all, and do the same there
4. Twice a year: check stored textiles — wardrobes, airing cupboard, loft, any boxed wool
5. Late winter: the annual look, before the spring wave rather than after it

Monitoring Traps, Which Do the Watching For You

In a house with rooms nobody enters, traps are worth more than anywhere else, because they are watching the rooms you are not in.

• One per rarely used room, at floor level, in a corner, out of draughts and sunlight
• Numbered and dated on the card
• Check them when you are in the room anyway rather than making a special trip
• Replace when dusty or the bait is spent — check the pack, but expect roughly eight to twelve weeks
• Any catch in a room that was treated and quiet is worth acting on early

The Things That Actually Bring It Back

1. An untreated source elsewhere — a loft, an outbuilding, stored textiles that were out of scope
2. Something new brought in — a rug, second-hand upholstery, boxes out of storage
3. A room that was not treated because nothing had been seen in it
4. Old felt underlay left down under a treated carpet
5. Putting untreated items back into a treated room

Four of those five are scope questions rather than treatment failures, which is why the conversation about what was included matters as much as the visit.

Habits That Cost Nothing

• Store woollens clean and sealed — larvae prefer soiled fibre, so clean before storing rather than after
• Check anything wool before it comes into the house
• Empty the vacuum outside, not into the kitchen bin
• Do not stack boxes on a carpet and leave them for years
• Keep the offcut from any new carpet — it is what makes an invisible repair possible later
