One Outbreak Or a Season?
Worth separating before anything else, because the response is not the same.
- A one-off arrives with something — a rug, a second-hand chair, boxes out of storage — and once the population is eliminated it does not come back
- A seasonal return comes back at a similar point each year, often spring or early summer, in a house where nothing new arrived. That means a reservoir that survives the treatment because the treatment never reached it
The question that sorts it in one answer. Does it come back at the same time of year? A treatment failure returns within weeks, in the same room. A reservoir returns in season, often in a different room, after months of nothing.
What a Roof Space Feeds Them
More than most people would guess, and none of it is anything anyone put there deliberately.
- Old bird nests in the eaves or on the wall plate — feathers, down and animal hair, which is close to ideal
- Rodent nests and remains, which are pure keratin
- Dead insects, which accumulate at the edges over years
- Stored textiles — boxed clothing, blankets, old curtains, carpet offcuts
- Some older insulation, where it is wool or hair based
- Debris in the eaves, which nobody has ever cleared
How It Gets Into the Rooms
Adults are poor fliers but they do not need to go far. A loft hatch, a gap around a light fitting, a badly sealed pipe run, an airing cupboard that opens into the roof space — any of those is a route, and none of them is unusual.
That is why the room that gets it first is so often the landing or the bedroom below the hatch, and why the ground floor is usually affected last if at all.
Why Treating the Carpets Alone Does Not Hold
It usually works. Carpets treated properly go quiet, damage stops, and everybody is satisfied for eight or nine months.
Then the population upstairs produces its next generation and reseeds the rooms below, which is not a failure of the treatment. It is a treatment that was aimed at the part of the house the moths were visiting rather than the part they were living in.
What Actually Breaks the Cycle
- Establish whether there is a source in the roof space, from the hatch
- Clear the material feeding it, once that can be done
- Treat the roof space as well as the rooms below
- Close the entry points that let birds or rodents in, at the eaves, vents and roofline
- Cap an unused chimney
- Seal the routes between the loft and the rooms — the hatch, and gaps around fittings and pipe runs
