Why It Does Not Finish the Job
- Reach. A hand spray treats the surface it is applied to. Under unmoved furniture, beneath underlay, under a rug that was not lifted and inside upholstery are all untouched
- Eggs. Far less affected than larvae, and they go on hatching for weeks after an application
- Staging. A population has every stage in it at once, so one application on one day removes a slice
- Scope. People spray the room where they saw the moth, and by then eggs are usually in the next one
The result is three quiet weeks, then moths again, which reads as the product failing. The product worked on the part it reached.

- Dye instability. Natural dyes in older and hand-knotted rugs are considerably less stable than modern synthetic ones. Wetting can lift colour
- Bleeding. A wet area can carry dye from one colour into an adjacent one. On a rug that is permanent and it is exactly the sort of damage that is visible from across a room
- Staining. Solvent and water rings on wool, particularly on light or undyed areas
- Shrinkage and distortion where a foundation is wetted unevenly
- Residue. Some products leave a deposit that attracts soiling afterwards, so the area greys differently over the following year
- Silk. If there are silk highlights, the tolerance for any of this is lower again
Testing on an inconspicuous corner does not make it safe. Dye behaviour varies across a single rug, an inconspicuous corner is usually a different colour from the area you are worried about, and the effects of some of this appear over weeks rather than minutes.
What To Do Instead, With a Valuable Item
- Take it out of the equation — bagged sealed, out of the house, straight to a specialist
- Have the room treated as a room
- Have the item assessed and cleaned by a specialist rug cleaner or textile restorer, who will know what its dyes will tolerate
- Deal with damage as a repair question afterwards, not before
- Do not put it back until the room is clear
Where DIY Genuinely Helps
- Vacuuming — thorough, including edges and under furniture, emptied outside each time. Gentle and beater-bar-free on anything valuable. It physically removes eggs, larvae and debris and it is the most effective householder measure there is
- Washing what can safely be washed, hot
- Sealing woollens clean and dry
- Monitoring traps, which measure whether anything is changing
- Disposing of old carpet offcuts and unused underlay
When To Stop
- Any valuable textile involved — before starting, not after
- Numbers not falling by week six
- Damage grown past a mark you made
- More than one room affected
- Underlay, upholstery interiors or stored textiles involved
