What a DIY Spray Does and Does Not Do

• Does: kill larvae and adults it actually reaches, on the surface it is applied to
• Does not: reach under furniture that was not moved, under underlay, into board gaps, under a rug that was not lifted, or into a room that was not sprayed
• Does not: deal with eggs to anything like the same degree, and eggs go on hatching for weeks
• Does not: tell you whether it worked, which is a bigger problem than it sounds

The Cycle That Eats a Year

1. Weeks one to three. Spray applied. Adults die off. Everything goes quiet and it looks solved
2. Weeks four to eight. A few moths. Easy to attribute to stragglers, and reasonable to do so
3. Months three to four. More moths. Second application, usually to the same area as the first
4. Months five to eight. Quiet again, then moths in a different room. Third purchase, wider this time
5. Months nine to twelve. Damage now visible in two rooms and the call gets made

Nobody in that sequence did anything unreasonable. Each step followed sensibly from the last. The problem is that the whole thing takes a year, and the larvae feed for all of it.

The Measurement Problem

The single biggest weakness of the DIY route is not the product. It is that most people have no way of telling whether it is working, so a failing approach continues for months on the strength of a quiet fortnight.

1. Mark the edge of every damaged patch and photograph it with the date
2. Put a monitoring trap in each affected room, numbered and dated
3. Count moths weekly and write it down
4. Set a decision point before you start — for instance, if numbers are not falling by week six, stop and call

That turns DIY from an open-ended commitment into a bounded experiment, which is the only version of it worth doing.

• Vacuuming, thoroughly and including edges and under furniture, emptied outside every time. This physically removes eggs, larvae and debris and it is the most effective thing a householder can do
• Washing what can be washed, hot, and cleaning what cannot
• Sealing woollens clean and dry
• Monitoring traps, which are the measurement
• Disposing of old carpet offcuts and unused underlay

• Numbers not falling by week six
• Damage grown past a mark you made
• More than one room affected
• A second application already made
• Underlay, a loft, a garage or stored textiles involved
