Can Moth-Damaged Wool Carpet Actually Be Repaired?

Sometimes, and more often than people assume, though it depends entirely on the size and position of the damage.

Patching from an offcut

The most common answer. A section is cut out and replaced with matching carpet, ideally from an offcut kept after the original fitting. If no offcut exists, carpet can sometimes be taken from inside a fitted wardrobe or under a permanent piece of furniture and used to patch the visible area.

Done well by a carpet fitter it is close to invisible on a plain carpet. On a patterned one it is harder and the join is more likely to show.

Re-tufting

For small areas, a specialist can insert new tufts of matching yarn into the backing. It is slow, it is skilled, and it works best on a limited patch rather than a spreading area.

Reweaving, for rugs

On a hand-knotted rug of any value, a specialist restorer can reweave damaged areas. That is a textile conservation job rather than a carpet-fitting one, and it is worth getting a quote before assuming a rug is finished.

Fair Wear and Tear, or Damage?

The distinction that decides deposit deductions, and it comes up constantly in a town with this much rented property. We are pest controllers rather than adjudicators, so this is what we see rather than a ruling.

• Fair wear and tear generally covers deterioration from normal use over time — flattening in a traffic path, general fading
• Damage generally covers something that happened, as distinct from something that wore out
• Betterment is the principle that a landlord cannot charge for a new carpet to replace an old one — the age and remaining life of the carpet is usually taken into account
• Mitigation matters both ways: an infestation reported and treated promptly is a different case from one left to spread

In practice the arguments turn on evidence rather than principle. The check-in inventory, dated photographs, a written report of the first sighting, and an invoice showing prompt treatment are what carry weight.

How Bad Does It Have to Be Before Replacement?

There is no threshold, but a few practical markers:

• Damage in one contained area, with the rest of the carpet sound — usually repairable
• Several separate damaged areas in one room — repair becomes conspicuous and replacement is often better value
• Damage in a doorway or the middle of a traffic path — a patch there wears differently and will show
• Backing or underlay affected as well as the pile — a patch will not hold
• A carpet already near the end of its life — the arithmetic usually favours replacing

Prevention, Which Is Mostly Two Habits

1. Move something heavy every few months and look underneath. One item, rotating. That is the whole early-warning system
2. Vacuum the edges, not just the middle, and empty the vacuum outside afterwards
3. Check anything wool coming into the property — rugs, second-hand furniture, boxes out of storage
4. Store woollens clean and sealed rather than loose in a wardrobe
5. In a let property, inspect and photograph under supplied furniture at every changeover
6. Keep the offcut from any new carpet. It costs nothing and it is what makes an invisible repair possible years later
