What You See Is Not What Is Happening

Adults are the visible stage and the least important one. They do not feed, they do not damage anything, and they live a few weeks. The larvae do all the eating and they are hidden.

So a house that produces moths in April and nothing in November has not been clear since November. It has had larvae feeding quietly the whole time, and what changed in April was that a generation reached adulthood together.

The Year, Roughly

• Late winter: nothing visible. Larvae feeding slowly
• Spring: the first wave of adults. This is when most people first notice, and it is also when the damage from the winter becomes apparent as furniture is moved
• Summer: the busiest period, and often a second generation
• Autumn: fewer adults visible, feeding continuing
• Winter: quiet on the surface. Not over

Three Patterns, Three Different Answers

1. A few weeks after treatment, same room. Eggs hatching, or an area that was not reached. Deal with it now rather than waiting
2. A different room, a couple of months later. The scope was too narrow. Adults had already moved before the treatment
3. The same point next year, after months of nothing. A source that survives outside the treated area — a loft, an outbuilding, stored textiles, or a neighbouring property

These get treated as the same complaint and they are not. The first is finishing a job, the second is widening it, and the third is looking somewhere nobody has looked yet.

What Makes a House a Repeat Customer

• Consistent warmth, which removes the natural winter pause
• Wool carpet or older felt underlay, which is a permanent food supply
• Rooms that are used less, so nothing is ever disturbed
• A lot of fitted furniture, creating still, dark floor area
• Stored textiles in a loft, garage or cupboard
• An adjoining property with the same problem

None of these are faults, and none of them are about how clean a house is. They are about how still it is.

Using the Calendar Instead of Reacting To It

1. Do the check in late winter, before the spring wave rather than after it
2. Move one heavy item per room and look, rotating which one
3. Vacuum the carpet edges properly at the same time, and empty the vacuum outside
4. Look at stored textiles once a year
5. If this is an annual event, treat before the season rather than during it
