Does Insurance Cover It? Almost Certainly Not
Worth saying plainly rather than leaving people to find out. Most household policies exclude damage caused by moths, insects and vermin, and they exclude gradual damage — wear, deterioration and anything that happens slowly over time.
Moth damage is both of those things at once, which is why claims of this kind are usually declined. Read your own policy wording rather than taking this as the answer for your policy, but expect the exclusion to be there.
What that changes. If nobody else is paying, the arithmetic is entirely between treatment and replacement — and treatment is the cheaper number by a wide margin, provided it is done to the right scope.
What Can Be Repaired
Patching
A damaged section is cut out and replaced with matching carpet, ideally from an offcut kept after fitting. Failing that, a fitter can often take a piece from inside a fitted wardrobe or from under a permanent piece of furniture and use it on the visible area.
On a plain carpet a good fitter can make it nearly invisible. On a patterned one, less so.
Re-tufting
New tufts of matching yarn inserted into the backing by a specialist. Effective on a contained patch, impractical over a large or spreading area.
Rugs
A hand-knotted rug of value can be rewoven by a textile restorer. Get a quote before assuming it is finished.
When a Room Is Past Repair
After repeated outbreaks this is a real question rather than a theoretical one, and the markers are practical.
- Three or more separate damaged areas in one room — patches will be visible as a set even if each is good
- Damage in a doorway or the middle of a traffic path, where a patch wears differently and shows within a year
- Backing or underlay affected as well as the pile — a patch will not hold
- A carpet already near the end of its life, where the repair cost approaches a proportion of replacement
- Damage that has grown past its marks after two treatments — settle the infestation before spending anything on the carpet
Doing a Replacement Properly
If a room is going to be recarpeted after repeated infestation, the order is what protects the money.
- Treat, and confirm it has held — no fresh webbing, no growth past the marks, at eight weeks
- Lift the old carpet AND the underlay, and get both out of the property rather than into the garage
- Have the exposed floor, the gripper rods and the perimeter treated before anything new goes down
- Then fit
Old carpet rolled up and stored in a garage is a food source with a door to the house, and it is one of the more common ways a cleared property gets it again.
Preventing the Next One
- Move one heavy item every few months and look underneath, rotating which one
- Vacuum the carpet edges against the skirting as well as the middle, and empty the vacuum outside
- Do the check in late winter, before the spring wave
- Keep stored textiles out of the loft and garage, or sealed
- Check anything wool coming into the house
- Keep the offcut from any new carpet
