About Fleas
Fleas are not just a nuisance on your cat or dog—they can quickly become a serious infestation in your home. For every flea seen on your pet, there can be up to 99 more developing in carpets, bedding, and upholstery. If left untreated, your pet can suffer significant discomfort and health issues.
Flea bites are more than irritating. Flea saliva is highly allergenic and can trigger Flea Allergic Dermatitis (FAD), causing severe itching, redness, and hair loss in pets. In heavy infestations, fleas consume enough blood to cause anaemia, which can be particularly dangerous for puppies and kittens, and in extreme cases, may even be life-threatening.
Fleas have a rapid life cycle, typically living between 7 and 14 days. Adult fleas spend part of their lives feeding on your pet and then return to your carpets and upholstery to lay eggs. Flea larvae burrow deep into fabrics and can remain dormant for several months, only to re-emerge when they sense warmth and movement. This constant cycle makes infestations difficult to control without professional treatment.
Spotting Fleas
Some of the most obvious signs of fleas include:
-
Pets scratching, biting, or grooming excessively
-
Visible fleas in your pet’s fur, which are dark brown and about 1–2mm long
-
Tiny black specks of flea dirt under your pet’s fur
Fleas are most prevalent during the warmer summer months, but they can also thrive in centrally heated homes during winter.
Preventing Flea Infestations
The best times to treat your pets are in winter and just before summer begins. Regular flea prevention—through spot-on treatments, collars, or oral medications—can significantly reduce the risk of infestations. Consistent vigilance is key to keeping your pets and home flea-free year-round.
