What Is Actually at That Line

Where carpet meets skirting in a modern house, several things converge in a strip a couple of inches wide.

• The gripper rod, a timber batten with pins, set back from the wall
• The gully between gripper and skirting, where the carpet edge is tucked down
• The cut edge of the carpet, and the cut edge of the underlay
• Accumulated fibre and hair, which migrates to the edges of a room and settles there
• The underlay's own perimeter, exposed at the tuck

What You Will See

• A narrow band of thinning following the wall, if the carpet is wool or a wool mix
• Fine webbing in the gully between carpet edge and skirting
• A sandy debris along that line
• Larvae and cases tucked into the tuck, the colour of the carpet
• On a synthetic carpet: webbing and debris but no thinning at all, which still means an active population

That last one catches people out. No damage does not mean no infestation when the carpet is not edible.

Why the Vacuum Never Deals With It

1. A standard vacuum head is too wide for the angle and rides over the gully entirely
2. The crevice tool reaches it but almost nobody uses it around a whole room
3. Furniture stands against the wall in most rooms, so the worst runs are not reachable at all
4. Whatever is under the carpet is not reachable by any vacuum

Which is why a room can be cleaned diligently for years and still have this. It is not a cleaning failure — the affected strip is not accessible to cleaning.

What To Do About That Strip

1. Run the crevice tool along the whole perimeter of the affected room, including behind furniture where you can move it
2. Empty the vacuum outside afterwards, not into the kitchen bin
3. Lift a carpet corner near where the activity is and look at the underlay
4. Photograph what you find before clearing it — the webbing and debris show where to concentrate
5. Do not shampoo or wet-clean the edge, which makes it a worse surface to treat

If the Carpet Is Coming Up Anyway

Worth knowing if a room is being redone. The perimeter, the gripper line and the exposed floor are reachable exactly once, and treating then is both cheaper and more thorough than treating through a fitted carpet.

And a new carpet laid over untreated underlay is the most expensive version of this: new flooring installed directly on top of a live food source.
