Moths With No Carpet Damage Means One Thing
Something is feeding, because adults do not eat and cannot sustain themselves — they live a few weeks and exist to lay. If the carpet is undamaged, the food is somewhere else.
In a modern house the first place to look is directly underneath it.
The Underlay Is Animal Fibre and the Carpet Often Is Not
- Older felt underlay is made from recycled textile fibre, much of it wool — genuine keratin, and a good food source
- It sits in permanent darkness, pressed between carpet and floor
- It is never disturbed, never vacuumed and never inspected
- A synthetic carpet above it shows no damage at all, because there is nothing in it to eat
- So the population can run indefinitely and the only symptom is adults appearing
The tell. Moths in a room whose carpet is sound, particularly a newish synthetic carpet. That is not a mystery and it is not a misidentification. Lift a corner somewhere it will not show — a wardrobe base, under a bed — and look at the underlay and the floor beneath it.
The Other Candidates in a Modern House
- A wool rug, top and underside, and the floor under it
- Upholstery — the hessian and webbing under a sofa, and natural fillings inside it
- Wardrobes, at the shoulders of wool coats and jumpers
- Stored bedding — wool blankets, feather duvets and pillows
- The integral garage, which is where carpet offcuts, camping gear and boxed textiles end up
- The loft, among stored textiles
First, Rule Out the Wrong Moth
- Carpet and clothes moths avoid light, stay low, and run or flutter rather than fly properly
- Pantry moths are near kitchen cupboards, flour, cereal and dried pet food, and they fly to a light. Treating the floor does nothing for those
- Outdoor species come to a lit window at night and tend to be larger

The Five-Minute Check
- Note which room, and at what height, over a week
- Move the heaviest item in that room and look at the floor and its underside
- Lift a carpet corner in a wardrobe base and look at the underlay
- Turn a sofa over and look at the hessian
- Open the wardrobe and check the shoulders of anything wool
- Check the kitchen cupboards, to rule out the food-moth version
