Plenty of pest control companies will not give a figure until somebody has been out. We publish a starting price because people are entitled to know roughly where they stand before picking up the phone, and because a company unwilling to say anything about cost is asking for a lot of trust very early.

£220 is where treatment starts. It is not a ceiling, and the honest position is that what a particular property needs depends on things nobody can assess down a telephone line.

What Actually Moves the Price

How many rooms are involved

The biggest single factor. Carpet moths rarely stay in one room for long, and treating one room in a house where three are affected is money spent on a problem that will resupply itself from next door within weeks.

How far activity has spread within each room

A contained patch under one wardrobe is a different job from an infestation running the full perimeter of a room and into a fitted cupboard.

What else is affected besides the flooring

• Upholstered furniture, particularly the underside
• Curtains, especially heavy interlined ones
• Stored textiles in wardrobes, lofts and boxes

The type of property

Whether follow-up is needed

The Comparison Worth Making

Carpet moth damage does not repair. On a wool carpet of any quality, the cost of replacing one room's flooring is a multiple of the cost of treating the house, and an infestation left to run does not stay in one room. That is the honest financial argument, and it is why the useful response to finding damage is to act rather than to watch it.

Is DIY Cheaper?

On paper. In practice it depends entirely on whether it works, and the reasons it frequently does not are specific rather than mysterious: sprays reach open floor while larvae are at the edges and under furniture; traps monitor rather than treat; not every affected room gets identified; and treatment stops when adult sightings stop, which is the gap between generations rather than success.

Light, newly noticed activity is worth a serious attempt with thorough cleaning and monitoring. An established infestation across several rooms usually costs more in repeated products and carpet damage than it would have cost to deal with properly.

Landlords, Agents and Commercial Premises

The same starting price applies. For rental property the period between tenancies is the cheapest and most effective time to treat — rooms are empty and every edge is reachable — and it avoids the considerably more expensive version, which is damage found at check-out and argued over.
