First: Are You Sure It Came Back?

Worth settling before anything else, because it is common and it changes the diagnosis entirely.

Adult carpet moths emerge in waves rather than continuously. After a wave, sightings fall away for weeks whether or not anything has been done. If a DIY treatment happened shortly before a natural lull, the lull reads as success and the next emergence reads as a return — when the infestation was never actually interrupted.

Reason One: Another Room

By a distance the most common. The room that was treated is the room where the MOTHS were seen. The larvae were somewhere else — a spare bedroom, the landing, the stairs, a dining room — and that room repopulated the treated one afterwards.

Reason Two: The Edges and Under the Furniture

A spray applied to a carpet almost always goes onto the open floor. Larvae are not on the open floor. They are along the strip against the skirting and under the bed, and a treatment that did not reach those has not touched the infestation.

If the furniture was not moved, the main site was not treated.

Reason Three: Something That Was Never Included

• A rug, especially its underside, or one rolled and stored
• Stored woollens in a wardrobe, loft, garage or box
• Upholstered furniture, particularly the underside
• Curtain hems and interlining
• The underlay, where the carpet itself is synthetic
• The stairs and the under-stairs cupboard
• The vacuum cleaner, never emptied after the last clean

Reason Four: It Was Reintroduced

A second-hand rug, chair or sofa; boxes brought down from a loft or back from storage; items inherited or passed on; clothing bought second-hand. Timing is the clue — if the return followed within a couple of months of something arriving, start there.

Reason Five: A Neighbouring Property

In a flat, a terrace or a semi, communal carpet, service voids and the gap beneath skirting on a party wall can all connect one home to another. It is worth considering if a properly executed treatment has failed more than once.

Reason Six: An External Source

Old birds' nests in eaves, soffits or a loft are concentrated keratin and support the same insects. The clue is a seasonal rhythm — a return at roughly the same time each year — and moths appearing upstairs near ceilings or a loft hatch rather than at floor level.

Reason Seven: It Was Stopped Too Early

The larval stage is long and variable, and in cool conditions considerably longer than people assume. Treatment that stops the moment adult sightings stop is stopping in the middle, and whatever was still developing carries on.

What Products Can and Cannot Do

• Pheromone traps catch adult males. They are useful monitoring — they tell you whether emergence is continuing — and they are not a treatment
• Household sprays vary, and most are applied where larvae are not
• Mothballs and repellents are for enclosed storage, not open rooms
• Freezing works for small items in principle, but domestic freezers do not hold temperature reliably and wrapping matters
• Thorough vacuuming genuinely helps and is not sufficient alone

What to Tell a Professional

If you are past a first attempt, this is most of the diagnosis and it saves a visit.

• Which rooms were treated and which were not
• Whether furniture was moved
• What product was used and how many times
• How long the gap was before they came back
• Whether anything was brought into the house in that period
• Whether the timing looks seasonal
• Whether rugs, stored textiles or upholstery were included
